angelica root essential oil usage

Our organic angelica root essential oil is steam distilled from certified organic Angelica archangelica roots. Angelica belongs to the extensive Apiaceae family of plants that includes carrot, fennel, and celery. It is also known as oil of the angels or root of the holy ghost. The name ”archangelica” comes from Greek arkhangelos, or arch angel.

This grounding oil that can help put your mind at ease during stressful times and inspire closeness and intimate connections. Angelica oil is used often in perfume blends for its earthy, musky aroma. It is also thought to have aromatic, immune-supporting qualities.

Angelica archangelica can be found growing native in many regions from the Himalayans, Russia, and scattered across Europe. The indigenous Sámi people of Northern Finland have long used the whole plant for food, shamanic medicine, and made flutes from the large stems. Angelica is also attributed to St. Michael the Archangel as it often blooms on the feast day of May 8th.

Aroma
Angelica oil has a dry, herbaceous, and slightly peppery top notes with an underlying earthy, woody back. It is quite unique and characteristic of the fresh or dried root if you are familiar with the aroma.

Constituents
Angelica essential oil typically contains β-phellandrene, α-pinene, α-phellandrene, and limonene.

α-Pinene is one of the better known terpenes that can be found in significant quantities in many essential oils such as myrtle, cistus, juniper, cypress, cotinus, rosemary, many pine varieties, St. John’s wort, and nutmeg. It is named for its characteristic piney aroma. Limonene is another prolific monoterpene found in numerous essential oils, mainly citrus peels. This includes the essential oils of sweet orange, grapefruit, bitter orange, tangerine, lemon, mandarin, lime, palo santo, elemi, and bergamot. Limonene is used in many cleaning products. α-Phellandrene is also found in pink pepper and elemi essential oils.

Blending and Uses
Angelica essential oil has some fixative qualities which help extend the life of perfume blends. When blended into creams or carrier oils it can be used to help with occasional minor skin irritations. Diffusing angelica oil can help support respiratory health and the nervous system.

This top to middle note blends beautifully with citrus oils such as lemon or grapefruit, or other grounding oils like patchouli and vetiver. Mix with spicy aromas like black pepper and cardamom, the woody oils of juniper and cedarwood, or uplifting lavender tea tree. Matching angelica with clary sage will a calming blend.
